It probably costs money in that you don't make any doing it, but I don't think they actually charge you to sail as a volunteer, right? It sounded very relaxed and groovy with the Chieftain; and yeah, totally, I'm sure she's not the most desirable ship for enthusiasts to sail on because there are some truly fantastic ships that have much more exciting sailing schedules, but it sounds like a great place to try it out and see how you like it.
A bunch of the crew members I spoke to said they were afraid of heights when they started, but now it's just something they do without really thinking about it. I'm not big on heights either, but I think I'd manage... you're clipped in with a safety harness the whole way, which for me makes the whole thing much more comfortable. I think I will go for climbing the mast next time I do one of these sails, just to see if I can. ;D
This is one of those things that makes me really mad about the debt I'm in... if I didn't have it, I could get by on practically nothing, but I have all these payments to make for things that do me little good, anyway. :( It's a weight I'd love to shuck off. Let's win the lottery!
