Well, you could really go country and just call them "critters." It works in so many situations, I can see why people do it. :D
(Also, with cattle they like to complicate things further by having terms like "heifer," which would be a young female who is over a year old but hasn't yet produced a calf. How you're supposed to tell that just by looking, I have no idea.)
